The Bible encourages and directs Christians to care for and share with those in need. James 2:17 states “faith, by itself, if not accompanied by action, is dead”. The purpose of the Reaching Out as Disciples of Christ cluster is to demonstrate Christ’s love by ministering to the spiritual, physical and mental needs of people in our community and globally. The cluster ministries listed below provide HUMC members the opportunity to serve according to their abilities and interests.
This ministry provides Christmas gifts for children of prisoners, and shares the love of Christ in the process. Volunteers are needed to serve on the leadership team, sponsor an “angel” and support the annual Angel Tree party.
During the summer, HUMC sends teams of youth and adults to help repair and upgrade homes in Appalachia. Preparation starts in the fall with fundraisers, Bible Study and skill development.
Housed in the basement of Founder’s Hall, HUMC provides the only clothes ministry in the area. Volunteers are needed to sort and organize the clothes and to staff the clothes closet.
Emmanuel Dining Room provides hot lunches to needy adults and children in Wilmington. HUMC provides the daily hot meal on the 9th of each month. Cooking is done at HUMC on the 7th. Volunteers are needed both days, and also as cookie bakers.
This ministry is the primary interface between HUMC and the missionaries we support. Through HUMC’s consolidated Missions offering, this ministry supports over 30 local, national and international missionary organizations, plus the six UMC National Special Sunday offerings.
HUMC works with the Hockessin Community Center to provide food and other personal care items to families seeking. In addition to the food donations, volunteers help distribute the items.
