The four year old class will be preparing the child for the kindergarten experience. Skills necessary for success in school will be emphasized. The child will become more confident and independent. There will be abundant opportunities for success. Our graduates will leave the ELC excited, ready to learn, and capable of meeting many challenges.
SOCIAL SKILLS
• displays self confidence, a sense of independence, and a sense of accomplishment • works and plays well with others • understands rules and responsibility to others • cooperates and learns to deal with frustration • completes tasks • uses appropriate manners • uses time wisely • considers rights and feelings of others
LANGUAGE SKILLS
• relates ideas in sequence • uses good sentence formation • pronounces sounds correctly • contributes to discussions • understands positional words • expresses thoughts well, using age-appropriate vocabulary
MOTOR SKILLS—FINE
• uses correct pincer grip with crayon and pencil • uses scissors correctly to cut basic, simple shapes • able to manipulate blocks, pegs, puzzles, beads, and lacing cards • uses appropriate control when painting with a brush • uses glue and paste correctly • able to copy various shapes (i.e. circle, square, triangle, etc.)
MOTOR SKILLS—GROSS
• runs • jumps • uses balance beam • hops on one foot and two feet • climbs • throws and catches a ball • walks backwards
PERCEPTUAL AND COGNITIVE SKILLS
• recognizes basic visual likenesses and differences in shapes, numerals , and letters (Visual discrimination) • uses left to right progression • able to make associations • reaches conclusions • able to solve simple problems • demonstrates good memory with songs, finger plays, etc.
READING REDINESS SKILLS
• able to recognize name • prints name • able to recognize, match, and name colors • recognizes upper and lower case letters • able to dictate and “read” own stories • understands the concept of rhyming words and opposites
LISTENING SKILLS
• has shown increased attention span • listens with a purpose and recalls details with accuracy • listens without interrupting • follows verbal directions • recognizes basic likenesses and differences in sounds (auditory discrimination)
QUANTITATIVE SKILLS
• recognizes numerals 1 – 10; 11 – 20 • is able to do 1-to-1 matching of objects • counts to 20 or more • understands the concept of “more than/less than” • understands size concepts • counts sets accurately (1 – 12)
SELF HELP SKILLS
• can manipulate a button • can manipulate zippers and snaps • can put on and take off gloves/mittens

• child knows his/her address and phone number • child knows his/her birth date and age
