Look around you. Do you know any family who hasn’t been touched by cancer?
Today, almost everyone knows someone with cancer – a family member, friend, coworker, neighbor … maybe even yourself.
Ministry to cancer patients and their families is critical to their health, well being, support and recovery. We know this not only because Scripture makes it clear, but also because hundreds of scientific studies have proven that spirituality and faith play a major and crucial role in people’s physical health … faster recovery times from surgery, fewer hospital days, lower death rates, unexplainable healings. These are but a few of the documented benefits.
Often, though, people don’t know what to say to someone with cancer, what will be helpful, what a person’s really going through who’s received that diagnosis. They don’t really understand what cancer is, the causes, the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual battles a person is undergoing nor what is needed to impart hope and encouragement at this time.
To gain valuable preparation for ministry to others or to someone in your own family, attend a FREE four-hour session at Hockessin United Methodist Church, 7250 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE, 19707, on Saturday, September 25, 2010, (Registration at 8:30 a.m.; Session from 9 a.m.-1:00 p.m.), This training is provided by the Pastoral Care department of Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) and is sponsored by Stephen Ministries of Hockessin and Aldersgate United Methodist Churches. Here you’ll learn all of the above plus:
- Why faith is so important to health;
- Why it’s important to reach out to cancer patients and their families
- What cancer is and isn’t
- Prevention information and supplementation
- The Art of Caregiving
Call the Hockessin United Methodist Church Office at 302-239-3030 today.

"The Joys of being Generous"
Stewardship Emphasis 2010
I thank you for joining me May 2nd - May 23rd, for our 2010 stewardship emphasis entitled "The Joys of being Generous." For the past couple of years, our nation has been experiencing since the Great Depression what many have described as the “American Nightmare.” Job losses, home foreclosures, increasing consumer debt, lower income growth, and decline in savings have all contributed to economic insecurity.
I’m sure we’ve all struggled with these issues at one time or another. I know I have! Beginning Sunday, May 2nd, we explored what the Bible teaches us about being generous, even in the midst of difficult times and economic insecurity. During the month of May, we discovered:
The Joy of Sharing Our Faith – giving our faith away;
The Joy of a Generous Heart – developing a "big heart" like mom;
The Joys of Being Generous – discovering the joys of generosity; and
The Joy of Being in Ministry – using our time and abilities to serve God and others
At the conclusion of our emphasis, we had the opportunity to make personal commitments of our offerings to God through our church for next fiscal year. We consecrated those commitments on Consecration Sunday, May 23rd.
These are important issues. Therefore, I thank you for journeying with me as we explored how we can truly experience "The Joys of being Generous.”
If you were unable to join us for this year's journey, please view the four part video series located on the home page of the web site . . .it will literally change your life! |

GUESTS JUST A COUPLE OF WEEKS AWAY!
Hockessin's 3rd time to host this year is approaching fast. It will be from September 12th - September 18th. As always, we are looking to increase our volunteer list. To volunteer to be a part of this ministry, contact Kymm Hockman.
To make our guests feel welcome, members and friends are invited to stop by the Welcome Center and write a “note of welcome” to be included in a notebook that will be made available to the families. Plan on stopping by any Sunday to add your message or email a note to Barbara Wolf,

GRAND OPENING OF DAY CENTER
There was a wonderful turnout and a beautiful day for the Grand Opening of the Family Promise Center on Tuesday, March 9, 2010! That date will also be remembered as the day Family Promise of Northern New Castle County admitted its first family into the network! Public officials, incredible volunteers, Board members, supporters and the media all came out in force to help officially launch the 153rd affiliate of the national Family Promise organization.

MINISTRY FAIR
Sunday, May 16th
FAITH HALL
To be held after the 8:30, 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. worship services, this event will provide the many, and varied possibilities that members and friends affiliated with our congregation have to use their spiritual gifts.
Faith Hall will have facts and displays from every service and ministry group showing what they do for the church, the community, or the world. YOU will be able to not only see these exhibits but also actually talk to people already involved in these different areas of ministry. This way, YOU will have the opportunity to make an informed decision about which areas of ministry YOU might like to serve.
Behind a person's giving to the church is for "Everyone to be in Ministry." And, one of the “Joys of being in Ministry” is to become more actively involved in the life of the church by serving. Here at HUMC, there are many ways that you might find to put your special talent or gift to use. So . . .
DON'T MISS IT!
There is a spot just for YOU, a unique place that has your name on it. Be open to the tug of your heart, to give some time, spread a little love, and be of service!
Cluster Leaders & Ministry Leaders -- To reserve a “spot” for your ministry, please contact Terri Sensing
